From April 10 to August 15, The Calgary Airport Authority will be working to connect YYC’s state-of-the-art baggage system in the International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal to better accommodate the more than 16 million travellers (and their bags) that come through YYC each year. By installing and integrating the baggage systems between terminals, it substantially increases YYC’s baggage system capacity and will allow for better tracking of bags and faster bag transfers — leading to an enhanced travel experience for YYC’s guests.
So if you’re arriving into the International Terminal on Tuesday or Thursday nights between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., you’ll notice a bit of a difference in the way your baggage is delivered while we complete this testing. Here are some interesting facts about the impressive baggage system:

The new Crisbag tote baggage system is operated with almost 3000 ‘totes,’ which will transport and connect each bag to its own individually-tracked Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) — by digitally storing the information on a tag and attaching it to the individual bags, the RFID technology works to provides 100 per cent positive tracking of passenger baggage within our new system.

The baggage system can process 8,000 bags per hour — nearly doubling the capacity of YYC’s previous system!

It incorporates nearly 20 kilometres of track and conveyors – that’s the same distance as a roundtrip to CrossIron Mills from YYC.

The system can process 99 per cent of bags in less than 20 minutes.

The system is more efficient than a traditional baggage conveyor system, consuming 60 per cent less energy.
