Calgary, AB, – The Calgary Airport Authority reported the number of passengers flying in and out of Calgary increased 6.9 percent in 2004, bringing the total number of passengers through Calgary International Airport to over 9.1 million.

Transborder (Canada-US flights) and domestic traffic continue to reach new heights, with more than a six percent increase in 2004. The transborder sector’s strong growth was due in part to the introduction of scheduled service to Las Vegas, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, with increased service to Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco. Domestic growth was further fuelled by new nonstop service to Peace River, Red Deer and Fort St. John and increased service to Halifax and Medicine Hat.

A record increase of 13.4 percent in international traffic can be attributed to the success of Asian charters, increased scheduled services to "sun" destinations such as Cancun, Cuba, Hawaii and Jamaica, and charter services to Liberia (Costa Rica), Manzanillo (Mexico) and the Dominican Republic.

“We are very happy with the continued growth of our passenger numbers”, said Julien DeSchutter, vice president of marketing at The Calgary Airport Authority. “We have surpassed targets for 2004, and we look forward to more record-breaking years.”

The Calgary Airport Authority is a not-for-profit corporation responsible for the management, maintenance and development of Calgary International Airport and Springbank Airport under long-term lease from the Government of Canada. Calgary International Airport is currently Canada’s fourth busiest airport with over 9.1 million passengers in 2004.
