Cathay Pacific Launches New Freighter Service at Canada’s Fastest Growing Cargo Hub

CALGARY (October 18, 2014) – The Calgary Airport Authority is pleased to welcome the arrival of Cathay Pacific’s Boeing 747-8 Freighter to Calgary. The inaugural flight, which touched down this morning, further positions YYC as a leading cargo platform linking business across to the world to Calgary and Alberta’s robust economy.

Cathay Pacific Cargo currently operates freighter services to 44 destinations around the world and this newest addition to its cargo network will expand Cathay’s presence in North America to 16 destinations. The move makes YYC one of only two Canadian airports to offer cargo service to both Europe and Asia.

“We are very excited to make Calgary the most recent addition to our North American network. Calgary’s strong business market, along with YYC’s constant focus on delivering a strong cargo platform made it the clear choice when deciding where we’d like to expand our business,” said James Woodrow, Cathay Pacific’s Director Cargo.

The flight commences twice-weekly scheduled service between Hong Kong and Calgary, increasing the flow of goods between Canada and Asia. Over the past 15 years, the Authority has been investing heavily in its cargo facilities, making YYC an advantageous choice for Cathay to enter Alberta’s market.

Calgary Airport Authority Senior Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer Stephan Poirier said, “We are very pleased that Cathay has selected Calgary as its newest freighter service in Canada. A direct service to Asia helps us achieve our vision of strengthening our extensive cargo connections, while further positioning YYC as a major cargo hub in North America.
