Overview

Runway DevelopmentThe Runway Development Project (RDP) is complete and is fully operational as of June 28, 2014. The new runway, which is YYC’s fourth runway and longest in Canada, is located between the Air Terminal Building and 36 Street NE. Construction for this mega-project began on April 4, 2011.

The three-year construction included:

  • More than two million person hours
  • An average of 420 workers on site each day
  • 7.5 million cubic metres of earth being moved
  • 100 per cent utilization of LED lighting for the runway and taxiways
  • $620 million budget

The Calgary Airport Authority celebrated the opening of its new runway by inviting 1,400 runners to Run the Runway and more than 10,000 guests to Roam the Runway on June 14 and 15, respectively. The once-in-a-lifetime event gave Calgarians an opportunity to enjoy exclusive aircraft displays, food trucks, live entertainment and more.
