Alternate Departure Heading Trial

In partnership with YYC Calgary International Airport, NAV CANADA is conducting a trial of alternate departure procedures for aircraft departing the east and west parallel runways when traffic is in a southerly flow (Runways 17 Left and 17 Right).

The trial is scheduled to begin on October 18, 2019 and run for 12 months.

In addition to continuing to use existing departure procedures, air traffic controllers will be able to assign an alternate direction, or “heading,” based on the flight plan of the departing aircraft.

The goals of the trial are to:

  • Deliver noise mitigation to communities south of the airport;
  • Respond to airport infrastructure changes; and,
  • Improve air traffic management during periods of high traffic volumes.

For more details about the trial, see NAV CANADA’s notice on their website HERE.

NAV CANADA and The Calgary Airport Authority will provide regular public updates over the course of the trial, and will consult with the Airport Community Consultative Committee (ACCC) to obtain ongoing feedback from communities and other stakeholders.

Community residents are encouraged to provide feedback on the trial by emailing community@yyc.com.
