Hello, Happy National Indigenous History Month!

My name is Jason Carter, I am an Indigenous artist based out of Canmore Alberta.

Originally from John D'Or Prairie, Little Red River Cree Nation.

I would just like to reiterate hello and good to see all of you YYC followers. 

My connection with YYC has been a phenomenal experience.

I was fortunate enough to be asked by them to create work for their extension about four-five years ago, and was fortunate enough to really explore the splendor of Alberta and the landscapes that we have as a shared resource.

To explore and represent that in my own style is really cool.

So I’ve got these 13 large-scale pieces at each of the gates, and as you’re exiting the plane to on the concourse go get your bags, there’s some other large-scale pieces like 44 feet by 5 or 6 feet.

It was super cool to be able to work in that large-scale.

It makes it really hard to do small paintings now — I love big paintings! 

So here is a small painting that really represents my style, and storytelling and what I am drawn to as an artist.

With these hard, clean lines that really represent an image, a place, a time and a feeling. And I think that is what for me as an artist that I’d like to share is that feeling of hope and joy, and that is how I approach all my work.

And those stories, and me exploring these new stories as an artist is kind of what really fuels me. What’s super exciting the airport, YYC, has really enabled that and let me explore these stories that I can tell.

Je m’appelle Jason Carter et je suis un artiste autochtone installé à Canmore, en Alberta.

Je suis originaire de la réserve John D'Or Prairie, de la Nation crie de Little Red River.

Bonjour à tous ceux et celles qui suivent YYC.

Mon expérience avec YYC a été extraordinaire.

J’ai eu la chance d’être invité, il y a quatre ou cinq ans, à créer des œuvres pour l’agrandissement de l’aéroport et de découvrir vraiment la splendeur de l’Alberta et des paysages que nous partageons.

C’est vraiment formidable d’explorer et de représenter cela à ma manière.

J’ai donc 13 toiles géantes à chacune des portes et il y en a d’autres grandes, mesurant environ 13,5 m sur 1,50 ou 2 m (44 pi sur 5 ou 6 pi), que vous pouvez admirer à la sortie de l’avion en allant récupérer vos bagages.

Cela a été vraiment agréable de pouvoir créer des œuvres de grandes dimensions.

J’ai maintenant bien du mal à peindre de petites toiles — j’adore les grands formats! 

Voici une petite peinture qui représente tout à fait mon style, ce que je raconte et ce qui m’attire comme artiste.

Ces lignes franches et nettes représentent évoquent une image, un endroit, une heure, un sentiment. Je pense que, en tant qu’artiste, j’aime partager ce sentiment d’espoir et de joie, et c’est la façon dont j’aborde tout mon travail.

Ces histoires et ma façon de les explorer comme artiste m’inspirent vraiment. L’aéroport de YYC a vraiment permis cela et m’a laissé me plonger dans ces histoires que je raconte.
