YYC’s travel tips for 2018 holiday season

Thursday, December 13, 2018 0 Uncategorized

YYC is forecasted to be a bustling hub of activity this season with approximately 1.4 million guests making their way through the airport in December. If you are a part of this gleeful bunch of holiday travellers, we have some tips to make your journey a little more effortless.

Here at YYC, we always strive to delight you, and your families, with some festive fun before you fly. Arrive early and enjoy an expanded lineup up holiday music from local talent, bring your little ones for a free photo with Santa (sans the long mall lineups), and receive complimentary gift wrapping at one of our post-security wrapping locations.

This season we collaborated with frequent YYC traveler and influencer, Mike Morrison, of Mike’s Bloggity Blog, to highlight some of his best holiday travel tips. From pet bathrooms, coat checks, to personalized white hat ceremonies, Mike lets Calgarians in on some unique ways we’re making guests’ experience memorable at YYC.

1. Know what to pack

Check out the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) travel checklists for general information to reduce and avoid delays in the security process. Please note that it is recommended that gifts are not wrapped when going through security.

DID YOU KNOW? For the Mexico sun seekers

If you’re connecting through Calgary from Mexico and onto another Canadian destination, the 100 millilitre restriction for liquids still applies. So unfortunately you’ll have to forego the enticing Duty Free sales in Mexico to prevent having to leave your new purchase behind when transferring at YYC.

2. Confirm your airline luggage and pet allowances

Be sure to check with your airline on baggage allowances. Restrictions can include baggage weight, number of bags permitted, no charge or checked bag fees, as well as size and number of carry-on items permitted on-board. Airlines may also have certain restrictions on travelling with animals.

View YYC’s guide to bringing animals in the terminal.

3. Check your flight before you leave, and come early

Relax in comfort, not in traffic! Considering the anticipated high volume of guests, leave yourself additional time before your flight. Also, it’s important to remember that each airline sets its own recommended check-in time based on the destination. Be sure to visit your airline’s website to check-in and reconfirm your flight details before you leave.

4. Plan your arrival to YYC

YYC has a variety of affordable parking options. Use our convenient parking fee calculator to determine the best rate and lot to meet your needs.

  • If you are staying more than an hour, it is more economical to park in Long-term.

  • If you are flying to a Canadian destination, your best parking option is parkade 1 (P1). Look for P1 signage in red.

  • If you are travelling to the U.S. or internationally – Look for P2 signage in blue.

There are also a number of ground transportation options available including taxis, sedans, Calgary Transit, shuttle buses and transportation network companies (ie. Uber). More details can be found at yyc.com

5. Avoid longer line ups

If you travel often and want to breeze through security and customs, sign up for NEXUS or Global Entry to be pre-approved for shorter trusted traveller line ups. Please note, processing can take a few months.

Wishing all guests a safe and memorable holiday season.
