(Calgary, AB) - The Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) has awarded The Calgary Airport Authority its ‘Special Project Award’ for its strategic implementation of safety initiatives in the new Connections Corridor at YYC Calgary International Airport. The accolade recognizes the focus on safety planning included in the development of the Corridor, the advancement the project has made in the construction industry and the precedent it will set for projects of similar complexity in the future.

The Connections Corridor is key to the airport’s strategy to better link its connecting passengers once the new terminal opens later this month as it will connect the existing, soon-to-be, Domestic Terminal to YYC’s new International Terminal. The Authority wanted to meet four core concepts which included maintaining its schedule, coming in on budget and ensuring there were no operational disruptions to the major international airport which needed to maintain its 24/7 operations during construction. Lastly, but most importantly, the organization wanted to ensure that safety was at the forefront. In order to do this, the Authority took a hands-on approach with the prime contractor. This meant working together to ensure that concerns and operational challenges could be dealt with as a team.
  
“Connecting YYC’s ambitious new International Terminal to its existing facility was a distinctive and rather complicated project as we needed to maintain full operation of our airport facilities while constructing a new façade to the exterior of our existing terminal building,” said Marco Mejia, Vice-President of Planning and Engineering for The Calgary Airport Authority. “The safety of our passengers and project teams is always our number one priority, so the Authority developed a unique and collaborative approach, working with prime contractor EllisDon, to ensure our leading safety standards were top of mind for all involved in this key project.”

The over 600-metre Corridor includes three modes of transportation for passengers moving through the expanded terminal facilities: allowing passengers to walk, use moving walkways or take the YYC LINK passenger shuttle, a custom designed, Canadian-built passenger transit system. The Corridor, along with YYC’s industry-leading connection processes, will better serve the millions of passengers that visit the airport each year. These new processes will allow passengers to connect easily from international, transborder and domestic flights, while remaining post-security and without having to pick up and recheck their bags.
