Noise Abatement Procedures (NAP)
Published in the Canada Air Pilot (CAP) and primarily intended for jet aircraft, the NAP specifies departure/arrival procedures, preferential runway determination, altitude restriction, night-time noise abatement rules, and take-off or vertical noise abatement procedures(VNAP). The CAP is an enabled document, therefore the procedures within are enforceable by the Regulatory Compliance Branch of Transport Canada. Each airport has specific procedures.
Noise Abatement Procedures and Air Regulation - Fast Facts:
- Runways are labeled by the first two numbers of their compass heading. For example, an aircraft using runway 35L will be following a compass heading of 350 degrees.
- Calgary has eight runway headings: 17L/17R or 35L/35R, 11 or 29 and 08 or 26 (a runway can be used in two different directions).
- Aircraft take off and land into the wind for safety reasons, therefore selection of the "active" runway is based on wind speed and direction.
- Engine maintenance tests, or "run-ups", sometimes are required during the night. If so, the operator must get permission from the Airport Duty Manager, who will designate an appropriate run-up location. A location is selected based on wind direction and principles of good airmanship, minimizing the impact on neighbouring communities.
- Construction and maintenance activities may have short term effects on noise abatement procedures.
