Concourse B restoration at YYC Calgary Airport reaches a two-year milestone

Concourse B restoration at YYC Calgary Airport reaches a two-year milestone

News Release

CALGARY — Two years after a severe hailstorm caused significant damage to YYC Calgary Airport’s domestic terminal, YYC is moving into the next phase of restoring Concourse B and preparing the space to safely reopen for travellers, partners and airport operations.

The work to date has been extensive, much of it foundational and taking place behind construction hoarding and above the ceiling line. Workers have been removing damaged materials, making the space safe, completing required roof and building-envelope (the physical barrier separating the interior and exterior) work, and preparing the concourse for the next stage of construction while advancing design plans.

“The work happening in Concourse B is helping us restore an important part of the terminal to meet the needs of today while preparing it for the years ahead,” says Chris Miles, Chief Operating Officer for Calgary Airports. “Over the past year, crews made significant progress on the roof above Concourses A and B and continued advancing work required to reopen Concourse B.”

Originally built in 1976, Concourse B was designed for a very different airport. Those who flew internationally or to the U.S. prior to 2016 might remember that Concourse B was a multi-purpose space, housing gates for international and trans-border (U.S.) flights, as well as access to the old Canada Border Services Agency customs hall. When those functions moved to the new international terminal in October 2016, the role of Concourse B changed – but much of the physical space remained largely the same.

The restoration work required after the hailstorm in 2024 involves a substantial program of investigation, remediation, construction and planning. Rebuilding the roof was a critical priority and one of the most significant portions of work to date. Approximately 60,000 square feet of roofing has been replaced above Concourse B as part of the work required to restore the building envelope.

The new roofing system meets today’s building and safety standards and includes a thicker, highly reflective membrane, which is more durable and improves protection against Calgary’s harsh weather while reducing solar heat absorption.

Inside, crews continued the work required to prepare the space for operation and future passenger use. Once reopened, the concourse will create a more functional, welcoming and easy to navigate experience for our guests, while continuing to support safe and efficient airport operations. The proposed design also has the added benefit of making better use of one of YYC’s most distinctive features: views toward Calgary’s downtown skyline, the foothills and the Rocky Mountains.

The next stage of work will focus on building out the concourse and preparing it to begin reopening to the travelling public in 2027. In addition to the work inside Concourse B, roof replacement across the broader domestic terminal building is expected to continue into 2028.

Together with YYC’s new Centralized (ABC) Security Screening point, the restored Concourse B will support a more functional and resilient domestic terminal experience — one that reflects the needs of today’s airport while preparing YYC for continued growth.
