The Calgary Airport Authority marks the end of West Runway Rehabilitation for 2024 season

The Calgary Airport Authority marks the end of West Runway Rehabilitation for 2024 season
Thursday, December 19, 2024 | Catgories:
News Release

CALGARY – The Calgary Airport Authority is proud to announce the successful completion of Phases 1 to 4 of the West Runway Rehabilitation project, which began on April 1, 2024. Over 300 employees from various contractors, sub-contractors, consultants and trades contributed to this project, overcoming challenges like spring snowfall, rain, a summer hailstorm, and city-wide water constraints. Despite these hurdles, the project team remained on schedule and most importantly had zero lost time injuries during the construction season.

“Work this year included installation of Runway End Safety Areas, rehabilitation of the northern section of the West Runway, including the intersection of the Crosswind and West Runways,” said Laura Samson, Director of Infrastructure of The Calgary Airport Authority. “I would like to extend a big thank you to all the teams involved for their hard work and commitment to safety as well as minimizing disruptions to operations as teams remained on or ahead of schedule.”

With work complete for the year, all runways at YYC are open for takeoffs and landings. No further construction will occur during the winter months, and the next phase of construction is scheduled to reume in spring 2025.

Community information sessions announced for 2025

In February 2025, The Authority will host information sessions to update local communities on the project and address questions about potential changes to aircraft movements for the upcoming construction season. Sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • Feb. 18, 2025: 6 - 8 p.m. – Crossroads Community Association (1803 14 Ave NE)
  • Feb. 19, 2025: 6 - 8 p.m. – Vivo for Healthier Generations (11950 Country Village Link NE)
  • Feb. 20, 2025: 6 - 8 p.m. – Vivo for Healthier Generations (11950 Country Village Link NE)
  • Feb. 25, 2025: 6 - 8 p.m. – Genesis Centre (7555 Falconridge Blvd NE)
  • Feb. 26, 2025: 6 - 8 p.m. – Genesis Place (800 East Lake Blvd NE, Airdrie, AB)

The Authority values the opportunity to engage with community members and provide updates on this vital infrastructure project. We extend our appreciation to surrounding communities for their patience and understanding, particularly regarding any changes in aircraft noise during construction. Projects like the West Runway Rehabilitation are essential to YYC’s and our city’s growth, supporting local employment and Calgary’s global connectivity.
