CALGARY – The Calgary Airport Authority is proud to announce the successful completion of Phases 1 to 4 of the West Runway Rehabilitation project, which began on April 1, 2024. Over 300 employees from various contractors, sub-contractors, consultants and trades contributed to this project, overcoming challenges like spring snowfall, rain, a summer hailstorm, and city-wide water constraints. Despite these hurdles, the project team remained on schedule and most importantly had zero lost time injuries during the construction season.
“Work this year included installation of Runway End Safety Areas, rehabilitation of the northern section of the West Runway, including the intersection of the Crosswind and West Runways,” said Laura Samson, Director of Infrastructure of The Calgary Airport Authority. “I would like to extend a big thank you to all the teams involved for their hard work and commitment to safety as well as minimizing disruptions to operations as teams remained on or ahead of schedule.”
With work complete for the year, all runways at YYC are open for takeoffs and landings. No further construction will occur during the winter months, and the next phase of construction is scheduled to reume in spring 2025.
