CALGARY – As Calgary prepares for a summer of major events and increased air traffic, The Calgary Airport Authority is reminding the public that YYC Calgary International Airport and YBW Springbank Airport are strict ‘No Drone Zones.’ This means drones are prohibited within 3.5 nautical miles – or 6.5KM of the airport centre, and 1 nautical mile (1.8KM) of any heliport. 

“Most may not realize the risk even a small drone can pose to aircraft, passengers, operations and emergency services,” says President and CEO of The Authority, Chris Dinsdale. “A single drone sighting can delay or divert flights, shut down runways and lead to costly investigations. We’re asking everyone to be mindful of the no drone zones to help us keep our skies safe for our guests, passengers, staff and communities.” 

Unauthorized drone activity is not only unsafe, but illegal with fines of up to $3,000 or possible jail time. The Calgary Police Service’s Remote Pilot Aircraft System (RPAS) enforcement team is authorized by the Minister of Transport to investigate suspected violations and inspect drone flight documents.

“Drones can seriously impact aviation and general public safety, especially during large-scale summer events,” says Patrol Sergeant Dallas Grimm of the Calgary Police Service. “In the past, we have had to issue fines to Calgarians who were found to be operating drones illegally, and within restricted airspace, causing significant disruptions. While we recognize drones are a great tool for both professional and personal use, we are reminding Calgarians of the rules that are in place for everyone’s safety.”
