YYC improves efficiency with an expanded passenger security screening point

YYC improves efficiency with an expanded passenger security screening point
| Catgories:

CALGARY – The simpler security experience at YYC Calgary Airport is expanding. Two additional screening lanes are now open at ABC Security, bringing all nine lanes into operation and increasing screening capacity and efficiency for domestic travel.

With nine lanes open, ABC Security now has the capacity to screen approximately 1,800 to 1,980 passengers per hour, an increase of more than 70 per cent compared with our previous domestic screening configuration prior to the end of 2025.

Phase one of ABC Security opened last December with seven screening lanes, bringing three previously separate domestic screening points together into one simplified, modern and centralized security experience. Since then, we’ve seen more than 3.7 million travellers pass through ABC Security. The two new lanes build on that foundation as we prepare for future growth – a projected 40 per cent increase in travellers moving through YYC over the next decade.

“This next stage is about making a part of the airport journey every domestic traveller experiences more efficient so that folks can spend less time in line and more time relaxing before they travel,” said Chris Miles, Chief Operating Officer for Calgary Airports. “With all nine lanes now open, we have greater flexibility to meet demand and more space to create a comfortable, welcoming experience.”

All screening lanes at YYC use the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority’s enhanced CT X-ray technology, which allows travellers to keep large electronics, medical devices and permitted liquids (up to 100 mL each) in their bags during security screening at YYC.

“The national deployment of CT X-ray technology represents an important step in the continued modernization of security screening in Canada,” said Denis Perron, Senior Director of Screening Technology at CATSA. “Since beginning this multi-year deployment in 2024, CATSA has continued to expand the technology across the country, and we’re very pleased to see the expansion at YYC’s ABC Security checkpoint now complete. The successful deployment at YYC demonstrates what can be achieved through close collaboration between CATSA and our airport partners, and we sincerely appreciate Calgary Airports’ support throughout this project. This milestone reflects our shared commitment to enhancing aviation security and the passenger screening experience.”

ABC Security is located on the departures level (between doors 4 and 7) and is easily accessible to travellers with any airline. The space was designed to provide a calmer and more accessible screening experience, with clear sightlines, more room to move and dedicated support for travellers who may need additional space or a helping hand during their journey.

The expansion represents another step in Calgary Airports’ ongoing investment in the terminal and guest journey, ensuring YYC responds to current demand while preparing to serve a growing city and region.
