How to keep your cool as summer travel at YYC heats up

How to keep your cool as summer travel at YYC heats up
| Catgories:

If summer in Calgary were a rodeo, we’re pulling the chute gate.

Between the G7 Summit, the Rotary International Convention, Stampede and a flurry of long-awaited vacations, reunions and first-time adventures, YYC Calgary International Airport is set to welcome over 5.8 million travellers this summer. That’s like filling the Saddledome three times a day, every day.

Whether you’re rolling out of town or touching down for the world’s greatest outdoor show, here are some tips on how to breeze through YYC like a pro:

1. Know before you rode-go

YYC is at the heart of global gatherings this summer — and while it’s exciting, it also means a few things to keep in mind:

  • Increased security presence: Expect heightened security around the terminal and curbside before, during and following the G7 Summit.
    • As a result, there is zero tolerance for unattended vehicles at the curb. Instead, use our Cellphone Waiting Lot to wait for free, or park for 20 minutes free in our Short-Term Parking to meet friends and family stress-free.
  • Plan your route: Some roadways around the terminal may be affected by temporary closures. Check yyc.com/G7-Summit for real-time updates before you leave home.
  • Check your flights: Check with your airline for the most up-to-date information on flights and departure times prior to leaving for the airport.

2. Saddle-up early

Summer travel is like a Stampede pancake breakfast: the earlier you get there, the better.

  • Arrive early: We’re expecting an average of 67,000 travellers a day this summer. That’s like packing the Saddledome more than three times — daily. Plan to arrive 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international ones.
    • Travelling to the U.S.? Access to security and customs for all U.S.-bound general boarding passengers is limited to two hours before your flight during peak travel times.
  • Reserve parking: Book parking online and in advance at yyc.com/parking
  • Pre-book accessibility assistance: Accessibility services are available and can be pre-booked via our Accessibility Assistance Request form or by calling 403-735-1234.

3. Enjoy yahoo-worthy experiences at YYC

You won’t need to go far to feel the Calgary spirit – just take a walk through our terminal!

  • Navigate YYC with ease: Find your way with our online interactive map or on-site at the Departures kiosk (between Doors 11 & 12).
  • Snap a Stampede selfie: From July 3 to 13, strike a pose at our YAHOO! sign located at Domestic Arrivals Door 12.
  • Hear the sounds of Calgary: Forget your Air Pods. Enjoy live musical performances by local artists throughout the airport this summer!
  • Travelling with little ones? Look for our fun zones! There are seven main fun zones, with smaller mini play structures near the gate area in each terminal.

4. Sail through security and customs

Our friends at the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are ready to help you glide through security and customs — but there are a few things you can do to keep your boots from getting held up:

  • Pack smart: Liquids and gels must be under 100 mL and stored properly. When in doubt, check the CATSA website for up-to-date carry-on guidelines.
  • Headed stateside? Use the Mobile Passport Control app to speed up the process.
  • Use ArriveCAN: Save time at the border by completing your Advance Declaration up to 72 hours before your arrival to Canada.

From smoother security to local sounds and Stampede spirit, we’re here to make every moment at YYC part of your summer travel adventure. If you’re lost, just spot our White Hat Volunteers in their brilliant white cowboy hats and signature red vests.

Safe travels!
