Calgary Airports launches YYC AeroNex aviation technology and infrastructure hub
| Catgories:

CALGARY – This month Calgary Airports (formerly the Calgary Airport Authority) launches YYC AeroNex, a strategic centre for air transportation to ensure that Canadian airlines have access to competitively priced world class aviation support services and training. The project on-shores key components of the aviation industry while growing our local economy.

“The Calgary region is a prime location for the development of an aviation hub like YYC AeroNex,” says Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of Calgary Airports. “We have land, a dynamic, well-educated workforce, excellent post-secondary educational partners and a growing aviation sector in need of these services. The introduction of YYC AeroNex is an important step within our strategic goal of building long-term economic diversification and innovation for the region.”

Through a $172 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank to Calgary Airports along with an additional $172 million in loans from commercial banks, elements of YYC AeroNex are already underway. Calgary Airports and Lufthansa Technik will break ground this month on the construction of a $120-million engine maintenance, repair and overhaul and test cell facility that will service and repair Leap 1A and 1B engines for Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus 320neo aircraft. Calgary Airports expects to announce additional facilities and partnerships in the near future.

Development of YYC AeroNex will position Calgary and the region as a strategic centre for development, training, and innovation in aviation and its ancillary services, strengthening its position as a central node within global air transport connectivity. It is expected to draw skilled professionals to the region, enhance training and educational opportunities in engineering, design, technology, and aviation trades, and create a sustainable network of high-value jobs.

As it develops, the hub is also expected to draw airlines, aerospace technology companies, and additional specialized support services to the region, building an ecosystem that will increase overall GDP while diversifying and strengthening local economies.
