Calgary, AB — Concourse B at YYC Calgary Airport was originally built in 1976. Almost 50 years later, on August 5, 2024, it was hit with a massive hailstorm that caused catastrophic damage and closed it down completely. Now, a year on, Concourse B is undergoing a transformation that will definitively bring it out of the disco age and give travellers a world-class guest experience.
“A renovation of Concourse B is happening sooner than originally planned,” says Chris Miles, Chief Operating Officer for Calgary Airports. “But given this opportunity, it made sense to redevelop it with everything we know now about great design and great amenities. That means designing for universal access, better sustainability, and making it more open, more welcoming, and filled with natural light.”
Before the International Terminal opened in 2016 at YYC, Concourse B served domestic as well as international and transborder passengers. Now, as strictly a domestic terminal, it can be reconfigured without the secure walkways and glassed-in passages that characterized it when it did double duty. Along with bringing the building fully up to current building code and strengthening resilience, the renovation will allow for higher ceilings, roomier gate areas, and unobstructed views to downtown and the Rockies.
To prepare, construction contractors spent seven months removing water-damaged infrastructure and original building materials. This summer, work has begun on a replacement of the roof of Concourse B along with repairs to other YYC roofing materials that were damaged by hail. The work includes full replacement of approximately 60,000 square feet of roof, engineered with a resilient, sustainable design.
“As we finalize plans for the interior, we’re working with partners, including airlines to design infrastructure that meets their needs today and into the future, an investment that will last decades,” Miles says. “That means new IT, new security systems, new HVAC systems that will be long-term more sustainable and cost-effective.”
The renovated concourse is designed to dovetail with the new, consolidated Centralized Screening project currently under construction in the Domestic Terminal Building at YYC, which will decrease screening times and facilitate smooth passenger flow from check-in to gate.
Concourse B is expected to begin a graduated opening to the public in 2027.
